9 Popular Hot Sauces Ranked From Worst to Best in One Taste Test

A bottle of hot sauce can change the mood of an entire meal. A few drops bring warmth to scrambled eggs, a fiery splash livens up chicken wings, and the right pepper sauce can turn an ordinary burrito into something worth remembering. But which bottle deserves the best spot in your kitchen?

According to Instacart’s 2023 purchase data, Frank’s RedHot was the most purchased hot sauce brand on its platform, followed by Cholula. The analysis covered purchases from a network of more than 80,000 stores. Popularity, however, doesn’t guarantee that everyone agrees on flavor.

In July 2024, Megan Hageman of Eat This, Not That! tasted nine popular hot sauces with scrambled eggs, ranking them according to her personal preferences. Her results produced a familiar winner, but separate taste tests reached different conclusions.

Here are the nine sauces in her original order, beginning with the least preferred.

Louisiana Hot Sauce: A Tangy Start That Didn’t Impress

Louisiana Hot Sauce finished ninth, despite offering the familiar pepper-and-vinegar combination associated with its style.

The brand’s classic recipe uses aged peppers, distilled vinegar and salt. Hageman found its heat moderate, but the flavor left her disappointed. She described an unpleasant tang that overshadowed what she wanted from the sauce. Although the bottle delivered some warmth, it lacked the depth she preferred.

That doesn’t mean Louisiana Hot Sauce is universally disliked. Its last-place finish reflects one reviewer’s experience with scrambled eggs, not a broader judgment about everyone who enjoys its flavor.

El Yucateco Red Habanero: The Heat Takes Center Stage

El Yucateco Red Habanero finished eighth, largely because of its powerful heat. The Mexican hot sauce uses habanero peppers and tomato in its formulation. Hageman initially noticed sourness before experiencing a much stronger, delayed burning sensation.

For her, that intensity overwhelmed the other flavors. The sauce could appeal to someone who deliberately seeks a fiery experience. But if your preference leans toward balanced heat, the original review suggests approaching this bottle with different expectations.

Its eighth-place ranking isn’t evidence of poor quality. It simply wasn’t the flavor experience Hageman wanted with breakfast.

Hot Ones Original The Classic: More Vinegar Than Expected

Hot Ones Original The Classic Hot Sauce ranked seventh, despite being one of the milder products in the comparison. The sauce belongs to the Hot Ones product range, inspired by the interview series in which guests eat increasingly spicy chicken wings.

Hageman appreciated its approachable heat but found the flavor less convincing. She noticed strong vinegar notes followed by other flavors that changed noticeably as she continued tasting. Rather than creating the balance she wanted, the combination felt too complicated.

For readers who enjoy a pronounced vinegar character, that same complexity might be appealing. Still, the original tasting placed it below several more familiar supermarket bottles.

Texas Pete Original: A Gentle Introduction to Hot Sauce

Texas Pete Original Hot Sauce finished sixth, earning praise for its mild and smooth character. The reviewer found it gentler than she expected, with a consistency and flavor that reminded her of Buffalo-style sauce. That made it one of the more approachable choices in the lineup.

Texas Pete may appeal to someone who wants a little peppery flavor without making heat the main attraction. It could also be worth considering when a dish already contains several bold seasonings.

Its middle ranking reflects a pleasant but relatively restrained performance in Hageman’s tasting.

Huy Fong Sriracha: Sweet, Garlicky and Distinctive

Huy Fong Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce claimed fifth place, bringing a noticeably different personality to the comparison.

Unlike thinner vinegar-forward sauces, Sriracha has a thicker consistency. Hageman enjoyed its combination of sweetness, garlic and chili flavor but considered it less versatile than her higher-ranked choices. Her preference wasn’t shared by everyone.

In a separate 2022 blind tasting, Uproxx writer Vince Mancini ranked Huy Fong Sriracha first among 20 products. That disagreement is revealing. A sauce that finishes in the middle when paired with scrambled eggs can become someone’s favorite under a different testing method.

Tabasco Original: Sharp, Tangy and Adaptable

Tabasco Original took fourth place, standing out for its unmistakable vinegar character. Made with peppers, vinegar and salt, the sauce delivers a sharp flavor and a quick burst of heat. Hageman appreciated its versatility, even though its acidity was more pronounced than in several competing sauces.

She considered it useful across different dishes, including eggs and seafood. Tabasco’s fourth-place position demonstrates that the reviewer valued more than intensity alone. A sauce could earn a respectable ranking through its flavor and adaptability rather than simply producing the strongest burn.

Tapatío Salsa Picante: A Flavorful Contender

Tapatío Salsa Picante earned third place, impressing Hageman with its thicker texture and layered flavor. She noticed garlic, gentle sweetness and pronounced pepper notes working together without overwhelming heat. That balance helped Tapatío stand above six other sauces.

Other reviewers have also responded favorably to the brand. In its hot sauce comparisons, Sporked preferred Tapatío over Cholula for certain Mexican-style applications.

That makes Tapatío an interesting alternative for anyone who wants a substantial sauce with noticeable pepper flavor.

Frank’s RedHot Original: Familiar Flavor With Broad Appeal

Frank’s RedHot Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce finished second, giving the popular brand another reason to celebrate. Hageman enjoyed its familiar, rich flavor and found its acidity less sharp than Tabasco’s. She also considered it particularly well suited to chicken.

Frank’s popularity extends beyond one taste test. Instacart’s analysis of 2023 purchases placed the brand first on its grocery platform. However, purchasing figures and flavor rankings measure different things.

A bottle can sell exceptionally well without being everyone’s favorite, just as an overlooked sauce can impress a particular reviewer. For Hageman, Frank’s came close to winning, but one competitor offered a more appealing overall balance.

Cholula Original: The Reviewer’s Favorite

Cholula Original Hot Sauce finished first, winning Hageman over with a combination of tanginess, smoky notes and a citrus-like character. The sauce delivered a noticeable kick without overwhelming the flavors she enjoyed.

Its balance made it her favorite companion for the scrambled eggs used throughout the test. Interestingly, Sporked’s reviewers also selected Cholula as their preferred hot sauce for breakfast, even while favoring Tapatío in another comparison. But Cholula wasn’t everyone’s champion.

In Uproxx’s separate 20-sauce blind tasting, it finished eighth, while Huy Fong Sriracha took first place. Those differing outcomes make Cholula a defensible favorite, not an undisputed winner.

Which Hot Sauce Should You Choose?

The most useful lesson from these rankings is that the best hot sauce depends on what you’re eating and the flavors you enjoy.

Cholula impressed Hageman on scrambled eggs, Frank’s offered a familiar flavor she liked with chicken, and Tapatío delivered a satisfying balance of garlic, peppers and sweetness.

Meanwhile, Huy Fong Sriracha proved that a fifth-place finish in one review doesn’t prevent a first-place showing in another. Rather than buying a bottle solely because it tops somebody else’s list, think about whether you prefer vinegar, sweetness, garlic, smoky notes or a stronger pepper kick.

A good hot sauce should complement your food, not compete with it. And sometimes, the bottle that transforms your favorite dinner isn’t the one with the highest ranking. It’s the one you keep reaching for.
