A 17-year-old Mississippi teen is facing capital murder charges after authorities said an elderly Simpson County couple was killed inside their home before deputies were met with gunfire during a welfare check that escalated into a hours-long standoff.
The victims were identified as Billy Blair, 74, and Virginia Carol Blair, 71, a married couple from Mendenhall. Investigators said Cordarius Laray Hobbs, 17, was taken into custody after fleeing the home and being shot by a Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper during a foot pursuit.
The case began around midday on June 3, when Simpson County deputies responded to a home in the 100 block of W.L. Blair Circle after family members could not reach the couple, according to welfare check response reporting from WLBT.
Deputies Arrived and Encountered Gunfire
Authorities said two deputies were sent to the residence for a welfare check. When they arrived, officials said they found signs of a possible burglary and were met with gunfire from inside the home.
One Simpson County deputy was shot during the response. Local reports said the deputy was struck in the foot and was later listed in stable condition.
The incident quickly drew a large law enforcement presence. Deputies, officers, tactical units, and state authorities responded as the scene shifted from a welfare check to an active shooting and barricade situation.

Authorities Said a Burglary Was in Progress
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety said the incident involved a burglary in progress when deputies arrived. Officials said gunfire from inside the home forced law enforcement and others nearby to take cover.
Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey told local media that deputies and civilians were pinned down by gunfire during the standoff. Authorities said multiple rounds were fired from inside the residence as officers worked to secure the area.
Investigators have not publicly released a final motive. Officials also have not said whether Hobbs knew the Blairs or whether the home was specifically targeted.
The unanswered questions have made the case even more unsettling in Mendenhall, where residents are trying to understand how a welfare check at an elderly couple’s home turned into a double homicide investigation.
Suspect Allegedly Fled Through the Back Door
During the standoff, officials said Hobbs told negotiators he planned to surrender at the front door. Instead, authorities said he ran out of the back of the home after officers deployed tear gas.
Law enforcement chased Hobbs into a wooded area behind the property. During the foot pursuit, a Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper shot him, according to investigators.
Hobbs was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
After the suspect was removed from the scene, special response teams entered the home. Authorities said the bodies of Billy and Virginia Carol Blair were found inside.

Teen Faces 13 Charges

The charges include two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon, and two counts of aggravated assault involving victims over the age of 65.
WDAM reported that Hobbs pleaded not guilty to all charges after bond was denied.
The charges remain allegations. Hobbs is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Community Mourns Billy and Virginia Blair
As the investigation continued, the focus in Simpson County also turned to the lives of the two victims.
Friends and neighbors described Billy and Virginia Carol Blair as kind, faithful, and deeply connected to their community. The couple was remembered as active in church and generous toward others.
WLBT reported that flowers were placed on the piano that Virginia played at church, while those who knew the couple struggled with the shock of their deaths.
Jason Busby, a friend of the couple, told WLBT that “everybody around here is still in shock,” describing the Blairs as good people who would help others. His comments appeared in the local community in shock coverage after the killings.
For many in Mendenhall, the case is painful not only because of the violence but because of where it happened. The couple was killed inside their own home, the one place family members expected them to be safe.
Church Became a Staging Area
The law enforcement response was visible across the area. WDAM reported that Oak Grove Baptist Church, located near the scene, served as a staging post during the active situation.
