8 Tequila Picks to Research Before Your Next Night Out

One brand name can hide two very different experiences in the glass. In a review dated October 2024, Costcuisine gave Kirkland’s Blanco 6.5/10 and its Añejo 8.5/10, a reminder to read beyond the logo.

That is the spirit of this shortlist: match the actual bottle to the drink you want. James Hastings’s April 2025 Tasting Table list draws on his hospitality work and personal tastings, so his criticisms reflect his palate, while official records provide the product details below.

José Cuervo Especial Gold

Start with the small print beneath the familiar name: Cuervo describes Especial Gold as a 40% ABV joven blend of reposado and silver tequila. Its own tasting notes emphasize sweet agave, oak, and vanilla, and it markets this bottle for margaritas. Jose Cuervo Tequila

Hastings found the Especial range medicinal and harsh, an opinion about that range rather than every Cuervo bottle. If you’re choosing it for a cocktail, compare the expected sweetness with what you enjoy before letting the familiar label decide.

Sauza Hacienda Silver

The production story matters here as much as the bottle name: Sauza says it extracts agave nectar before cooking the juice. Its current Hacienda Silver page describes green apple and fresh agave, followed by a moderately bitter citrus finish. Sauza Tequila

Hastings disliked Sauza’s sweetness and harshness, while Sauza presents its extraction process as a way to preserve fresh agave flavor. Your useful question is whether Hacienda Silver’s stated profile suits your margarita; the production sequence alone cannot settle the taste debate.

Kirkland Signature Tequila Blanco

Costco currently lists Kirkland Signature Tequila Blanco in a 1.75-liter bottle at 40% ABV. That gives you the size and strength to compare, without pretending a price from one storefront applies everywhere.

Costcuisine’s October 2024 review found the Blanco sharp and better suited to mixed drinks than sipping, while giving the Añejo the higher score noted above. Treat that as guidance for the bottles tasted, then check the version on your shelf before buying a large bottle for an unfamiliar pour.

Montezuma

Sazerac’s UK portfolio lists Montezuma Gold at 40% ABV and Silver at 38%, both in 70-centiliter bottles. Those are UK specifications, so read the local label rather than carrying the numbers straight across the Atlantic.

Hastings found Montezuma harsh and struggled to identify agave flavor, but that remains his sensory verdict. Since the brand appears on Sazerac’s official UK site, set aside speculation about its website visibility and focus on the exact bottle and the tasting evidence.

Socorro Blanco

Socorro identifies its Blanco as 100% Blue Weber agave at 40% ABV and says its ingredients are water, agave, and yeast. That gives you the company’s recipe, a starting point beyond the label.

In his April 2025 Drinkhacker review, Christopher Null found the Blanco notably sweet, while Hastings questioned the range’s pronounced vanilla and caramel character. Neither review is a chemical analysis of what went into the bottle, so use them to explore sweetness rather than infer undisclosed ingredients.

818 Blanco

Some reviews age more quickly than the liquid: Drinkhacker’s June 2022 review found pronounced vanilla and sweetness in an 818 Blanco bottle identified as NOM 1607. The current brand site explicitly says Blanco has evolved from its earlier sweeter, vanilla-forward profile.

Today, 818 emphasizes agave, tropical fruit, citrus, mineral, and floral notes, and attributes richer flavor and aroma to distilling at a lower ABV. Read the older tasting as a historical snapshot, then seek recent bottle-specific feedback before deciding whether the current profile fits your glass.

Margaritaville Silver

Oklahoma’s May 2026 spirits price posting identifies Margaritaville Silver Tequila at 40% ABV, including a 750-milliliter format. That confirms a specific product; Hastings’s broader 2025 brand criticism does not clearly isolate a particular version.

A July 2015 Honest Booze Reviews review criticized Silver’s aftertaste, but its age limits what it can tell you about today’s bottle. Before choosing it for margaritas, look for current feedback rather than treating a beachy brand name or an old review as the verdict.

José Cuervo Tradicional Blanco

End by looking back at a familiar name with fresh eyes: Cuervo lists Tradicional Blanco as 100% Blue Weber agave at 40% ABV. It describes three ingredients, agave, yeast, and water, with herbaceous citrus aromas and a balance of spice and sweetness.

This is a separate product from Especial Gold, whose official description specifies a blend of reposado and silver tequila. Put the two side by side and compare their stated styles, rather than carrying one bottle’s reputation onto the other.

Choose the bottle whose documented style matches your taste, then let the label earn its place in your evening.
