Birmingham police have identified the man killed outside a local barbershop as Jorge Fonseca, 34, after an argument reportedly turned into a fatal shooting on Saturday afternoon.
The latest reported detail is that the suspected shooter fled the scene but was taken into custody about 15 minutes later. Police have not publicly released the suspect’s name, and investigators have not confirmed what started the argument.
Fonseca was shot outside the West Valley Avenue Barbershop.

The shooting happened on Saturday, June 13, outside La Vida Barberia Spa y Estilismo on West Valley Avenue in Birmingham, Alabama. According to the People, the victim, Fonseca, was identified by authorities as a Birmingham resident.
Police were called to the business after a report of a person being shot. Officers found Fonseca outside the barbershop with an apparent gunshot wound.
Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures at the scene. Fonseca was pronounced dead on the sidewalk outside the shop.
Police Say Argument Became Physical
Investigators believe Fonseca and the suspect knew each other before the shooting. Police said the two men got into an altercation outside the barbershop before the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun.
The fight reportedly escalated quickly. Police have not said whether anyone else was physically involved before the shooting.
According to WVTM, officers responded to the 260 block of West Valley Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. Birmingham Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene.
Family Was Reportedly Inside
Several people were inside the barbershop when the shooting happened. Reports said members of Fonseca’s family were among those nearby.
That detail has made the case especially difficult for those who knew him. A routine afternoon at a neighborhood business became a homicide scene in minutes.
Witnesses were brought in for questioning as detectives began sorting through the moments before the gunfire. Police have not publicly shared witness statements.
Suspect Was Arrested Minutes Later
The suspected shooter reportedly left the scene after the shooting. Police later took the person into custody about 15 minutes after the incident.
According to Local 12, investigators believe the shooting followed an altercation outside the business.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity. Police also have not announced formal charges in the latest available reports.
Victim Identified As Birmingham Resident
Birmingham police publicly identified Fonseca on Sunday after notifying his family. The case is being handled as a homicide investigation.
According to ABC 33/40, police confirmed that Fonseca was 34 years old and from Birmingham.
The shooting adds another active case to Birmingham’s homicide investigations. Detectives are now working to determine what led to the confrontation and whether any additional evidence will change the timeline.
Police Ask Witnesses To Come Forward
Birmingham police are asking anyone with information to contact homicide detectives at 205-254-1764. Tips can also be shared with Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
Investigators have not said whether surveillance video from the business or nearby properties is part of the case. They also have not said when more information about the suspect may be released.
For now, the barbershop on West Valley Avenue sits at the center of a case built around one brief argument, one gun, and a family forced to leave without the man they arrived with.
