4 Fast-Food Chains Facing Growing Questions About Their Prices in 2026

Fast food used to be the easy choice when you wanted something tasty without spending too much. But today, even a simple burger, sandwich, or chicken meal can make customers think twice about what they’re paying for.

The affordability debate isn’t going away, either. In August 2026, Reuters reported that discounts alone no longer win over budget-conscious diners. McDonald’s, Subway, KFC, and Taco Bell have all introduced value offers, but their pricing strategies reveal why finding a genuinely good deal isn’t always straightforward.

McDonald’s

Remember when a quick McDonald’s run felt like one of the easiest ways to keep lunch affordable? The Golden Arches still offer budget-friendly choices, but their changing prices have attracted plenty of attention.

In May 2024, McDonald’s publicly addressed complaints surrounding an $18 Big Mac meal, explaining that the price came from an unusually expensive location. The company also acknowledged that the average U.S. Big Mac price rose from $4.39 in 2019 to $5.29 in May 2024, about 21%.

The company has since expanded its affordability efforts. Its official U.S. website advertised a limited-time $8 Big Mac Meal, alongside $4 breakfast meal deals and lunch or dinner combinations starting at $5 through its McValue program. Participating restaurants also offer an Under $3 Menu featuring familiar items such as the McChicken, McDouble, small fries, and four-piece Chicken McNuggets.

Those offers sound promising, especially for customers who don’t want to spend much on lunch. However, McDonald’s emphasizes that prices and participation vary by location, and delivery purchases may cost more and include additional fees.

There’s another interesting wrinkle. Reuters reported in August 2026 that McDonald’s global comparable sales rose 1.3% in the second quarter, underscoring the challenge of attracting customers with discounts alone.

For shoppers, checking the local menu before ordering remains the easiest way to avoid an unpleasant surprise at checkout.

Subway

Subway faces one enormous challenge: convincing customers they’re getting good value; people haven’t forgotten the $5 Footlong.

That famous promotion helped establish the sandwich chain as an affordable lunch destination. So when newer sandwich prices look noticeably higher, longtime customers naturally remember what they used to pay.

Complaints about Subway pricing aren’t entirely new. In August 2024, the company introduced a limited-time $6.99 any-footlong promotion, running from August 26 through September 8, to attract customers looking for cheaper meals.

By April 2026, Subway was trying another approach. The company announced its Fresh Value Menu, featuring 15 entrees advertised below $5, including $3.99 six-inch Deli Faves and a rotating $4.99 six-inch Sub of the Day.

The Deli Faves selection included the Cold Cut Combo, B.L.T., Ham & Salami, and Spicy Pepperoni. These were advertised launch prices, subject to restaurant participation, regional exceptions, taxes, and extra charges.

The important distinction is portion size. A $3.99 six-inch sandwich isn’t directly comparable to the full footlong deals customers remember, and adding extra ingredients can change the final price.

That doesn’t mean Subway has abandoned affordability. Its promotions show an effort to compete for value-focused customers, even if the famous five-dollar footlong remains a difficult memory to beat.

KFC

KFC has long offered crispy chicken, familiar sides, and convenient combination meals. But deciding whether a chicken dinner represents good value isn’t always as simple as comparing two prices.

Chicken combos can differ considerably depending on the number of pieces, chicken cuts, sides, biscuits, and drinks included. A cheaper meal might include fewer items, while a higher-priced option could offer more.

In March 2026, KFC introduced its Value Feast lineup, featuring Box Feasts advertised at $7, $9, and $11. Each box included a different selection of chicken favorites, fries, and a drink, giving customers several price points to consider.

The launch reflected the company’s interest in making meals feel worthwhile. Melissa Cash, KFC U.S. chief marketing officer, explained the strategy in the company’s announcement: “At the end of the day, people just want a meal that feels like it delivers.”

The emphasis on value was supported by broader company performance. Yum! KFC’s parent company, Yum! Brands, reported 3% global same-store sales growth in first-quarter 2026, while Reuters described stronger demand for lower-priced offerings across KFC and Taco Bell.

Still, those figures don’t establish that every KFC meal is inexpensive. The advertised Value Feast prices were promotional launch figures, and prices can vary by restaurant.

For customers deciding between chicken combos, checking exactly what’s included remains the best way to compare one meal with another.

Taco Bell

Taco Bell still has several low-priced menu favorites, but putting together an affordable meal can require a little more attention than customers expect.

A check of the chain’s official menu for its restaurant at 10749 Park Boulevard in Seminole, Florida, showed a standard Soft Taco and a Crunchy Taco for $1.99. Upgrading to a Soft Taco Supreme or Crunchy Taco Supreme raised the displayed price to $2.99.

Other menu listings at that restaurant included a Bean Burrito for $2.39 and a Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito for $1.59. The restaurant’s previously reviewed menu also listed a 3 Crunchy Tacos Combo for $8.79, though the full configuration wasn’t independently confirmed.

Those prices reflect one Florida restaurant, not a national average. Taco Bell emphasizes that prices vary by location, while taxes, customization, and delivery charges can affect the final bill.

Interestingly, the company’s emphasis on affordable choices appears to be helping. According to Yum! Brands’ April 29, 2026 earnings announcement, Taco Bell recorded 8% same-store sales growth during the first quarter.

Reuters also reported that lower-priced deals helped drive demand at Taco Bell and KFC. That suggests value-focused promotions continue to attract customers, even as affordability remains an important industry concern.

The practical lesson? Ordering inexpensive individual items can feel different from buying larger combinations packed with specialty selections and upgrades.

What Customers Should Know Before Ordering

Fast-food pricing in 2026 isn’t just about whether a burger or chicken combo costs more than it once did. Customers should also consider portion sizes, promotional restrictions, restaurant locations, and whether they’re ordering for pickup or delivery.

Checking a meal’s exact contents, comparing local menu prices, and looking for active promotions can help shoppers make better choices. Fast food can still be affordable, but finding the best deal often requires paying closer attention to the menu.
