The State Department is releasing 250,000 additional commemorative passports featuring President Donald Trump as the United States continues its 250th-anniversary celebrations.
A limited-edition U.S. passport that was once available only through the Washington Passport Agency is heading to cities across the country. Beginning in August 2026, eligible Americans will be able to attend special in-person events and apply for the commemorative travel document officially known as the “Patriot Passport.”
The State Department announced the nationwide expansion on July 30, saying it would make 250,000 additional commemorative passports available after the original release generated strong public interest. The special edition celebrates the 250th anniversary of American independence and features President Donald Trump’s portrait, his signature, the Declaration of Independence, and artwork depicting the nation’s founding.
Although the passport looks dramatically different from the standard U.S. passport, it is not merely a souvenir. It is an official travel and identification document containing the same security features as the regular next-generation passport book. Applicants will pay the normal passport fees, use established federal forms, and receive the same basic travel privileges.
What Is the Trump-Branded Patriot Passport?
The Patriot Passport is a limited-edition version of the standard U.S. passport book created for America’s semiquincentennial, the formal term for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The State Department first made the commemorative edition available in Washington, D.C., in July 2026. The agency has now expanded access through special passport events at agencies and processing centers around the country.
The defining feature appears inside the front cover. A portrait of President Trump is placed against the text of the Declaration of Independence and a flowing red, white, and blue American flag. Trump’s signature and the words “United States of America” appear near the bottom of the image.
The inside back cover presents a different scene. It shows an illustration of the Founding Fathers signing the Declaration of Independence, accompanied by patriotic colors and a prominent “250” anniversary mark.
The outside back cover includes the Freedom 250 emblem stamped in gold. Its design incorporates a Revolutionary-era flag with 13 stripes and the number 250 surrounded by 13 stars, connecting the modern passport to the original states that declared independence in 1776.
Why the Commemorative Passport Is Historically Unusual
Presidents have appeared symbolically in American passports before, but Trump’s inclusion marks a significant departure from the existing design.
The standard passport contains an image of Mount Rushmore, which depicts George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. It also includes quotations attributed to former presidents and major civil rights figures, including Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Trump, however, is the first living president to be pictured individually inside a U.S. passport, according to reporting by The Associated Press. That distinction transforms the passport from a general anniversary document into a highly personalized piece of presidential imagery.
The design may appeal to collectors, Trump supporters, history enthusiasts and travelers who want a document tied to the 250th anniversary. Yet owners should remember that the booklet remains a federal identity document. It cannot be altered, displayed carelessly, or treated like an ordinary commemorative souvenir.
Is the Patriot Passport a Real U.S. Passport?
Yes. The Patriot Passport is a fully functioning U.S. passport book.
It can be used for international travel in the same way as a standard passport, provided it remains valid and undamaged. The commemorative artwork does not reduce its legal status, interfere with border processing, or change the holder’s travel rights.
The passport uses the same next-generation security system introduced into regular U.S. passport books beginning in 2021. Those protections include:
- A durable polycarbonate personal-data page
- Laser-engraved identifying information
- Security fibers embedded in the passport paper
- Updated anti-counterfeiting artwork
- An alphanumeric passport number perforated through every page
The State Department says the commemorative version retains the advanced safeguards used in the standard next-generation passport. Older passport designs also remain valid until their expiration dates, provided they have not been damaged or officially canceled.
How Many Patriot Passports Will Be Available?
The nationwide release involves 250,000 additional passport books.
That number is substantial for a limited edition, but it represents a small fraction of the country’s annual passport production. The State Department issued approximately 27.35 million passports and passport cards during fiscal year 2025, including more than 4.5 million passport cards.
The commemorative allocation therefore equals less than 1 percent of the number of passport documents issued during the previous fiscal year.
Availability will depend on appointment capacity, demand, and remaining supplies. The State Department has not promised that every eligible applicant who expresses interest will receive the commemorative design.
Applicants should also avoid assuming that attending a regular passport appointment will be enough. The department has established a separate in-person process for people specifically requesting the limited-edition book.
How to Apply for the Patriot Passport
The most important application rule is simple: the Patriot Passport cannot be requested online or through an ordinary mailed application.
Applicants must schedule an appointment and appear in person at either the Washington Passport Agency or an announced 250th-anniversary passport event.
To request an appointment, applicants must call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 and select menu option 9. Appointments for the commemorative passport cannot be booked online.
Once an appointment is confirmed, the applicant should receive an email containing the appointment details. Unless the person qualifies for urgent issuance because of imminent international travel, the completed passport will generally be mailed after processing.
