What is a mojito?
Traditionally, a mojito is a cocktail recipe that originated in Cuba. The original mojito recipe consists of white rum, sugar, lime, mint, and club soda. Typically this cocktail is prepared in a high ball cocktail glass, muddled, and then stirred to combine. There are, however, many different ways to prepare a mojito, including: shaken, blended, stirred, and mixed!
Ingredient Notes
This mojito is filled with fresh citrus, refreshing mint, your favorite rum, and topped with ginger beer for the most perfect balanced cocktail!

- Lemon and Lime juice-I recommend freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice for cocktails for that bright, refreshing flavor.
- Kiwi-Use fresh kiwi if possible for this recipe. If using fresh kiwi, be sure to peel your kiwi prior to adding to the blender.
- Sugar-I used cane sugar for this recipe but feel free to review the low sugar, and refined sugar free, options listed above in the post.
- White rum-Preferred for this recipe is white, clear rum but feel free to use dark, or flavored white rum if that is what you have.
- Ginger beer-I used ginger beer for this recipe for a little added sweetness but feel free to use club soda or seltzer water as well.
- Mint-Fresh mint is preferred for this recipe for that summer frozen cocktail vibe.
- Ice-Ice is a must for this frozen blender cocktail.

Use the following step-by-step instructions for how to make this delicious kiwi mojito cocktail recipe:

Add all ingredients in to a high powered blender.

Blend until desired texture, or until well blended.

Serve with extra kiwi slices and mint (optional).

Enjoy!
Hint: Feel free to add less ginger beer to the blender if you would like your frozen mojito thicker and not as sweet. Alternatively, you can add a little more ginger beer if you would like a less thick, and icy, frozen cocktail.
Substitutions
Are you looking for a lower sugar alternative? Feel free to make the following cocktail substitutions for a lower sugar mojito:
- Omit sugar - feel free to omit the extra ¼ cup of sugar for a naturally sweetened, tart cocktail.
- Sugar alternative -you can also use a sugar alternative, like Stevia, for your cocktail to replace the ¼ cup of sugar.
- No refined sugar-instead of regular cane sugar, you can use a non-refined sugar alternative like honey, dates, or date syrup.
Variations
This recipe is easily customizable with multiple variations of alcohol and flavor suggestions:
- Dark rum - feel free to use dark rum if this is your preference. Just note that your mojito will be a tad darker in color.
- Flavored rum - I have used lime or lemon flavored rum for this mojito recipe and it was delicious!
- Mocktail - for a mocktail version, feel free to omit the rum and substitute with extra ginger beer!
Equipment
The only equipment that you need to make this cocktail is a blender and your favorite serving glasses! I recommend a high powered blender to ensure that the kiwis are well blended into the cocktail.
Storage
Make this frozen mojito ahead of time, store in the freezer, and then take out to defrost for about 10-20 minutes before serving!
This cocktail stands up to freezing for up to 1 month in the freezer.
Top tips
- Fresh squeezed lemons and limes are always preferred but you can use the pre-squeezing lemon and lime juice at the grocery store if you are in a pinch!
- Use a high powered blender especially if you are using a fruit with a lot of seeds, like kiwi/strawberry.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
Traditionally, white rum is used in a mojito due to its slight sweetness and clear color that balances the classic citrus flavors perfectly. However, if you are in a pinch and do not have rum, feel free to experiment with out liquors such as Vodka or Tequila.
Traditionally, club soda is used in a mojito recipe. However, feel free to use club soda, seltzer, sparkling water, or ginger beer to your recipe to add the refreshing fizzy flavor!
