9 Store-Bought Dill Pickles Ranked From Worst to Best in a Taste Test

A good dill pickle has its own personality. There’s that satisfying crunch, the sharp splash of vinegar, and the unmistakable flavor of dill that can turn an ordinary sandwich into something memorable.

But anyone who’s opened a disappointing jar knows that not all pickles deliver the same experience. Some are wonderfully crisp, while others are soft, overly sour, or surprisingly bland.

In August 2022, food writer Megan duBois conducted a nine-brand dill pickle taste test for Eat This, Not That, sampling different products with friends and family. Their preferences revealed considerable differences in texture, seasoning, and overall enjoyment.

Here are the nine pickles ranked from worst to best in that original tasting, along with what makes each one worth considering. The results reflect the testers’ opinions in 2022, not a universal verdict on today’s products.

Simple Truth Organic Kosher Dill Pickle Spears: A Disappointing Finish

Simple Truth Organic Kosher Dill Pickle Spears landed at the bottom of the original ranking. The testers found the exterior skin unusually tough, making each bite harder to enjoy than expected.

Unfortunately, the interior offered the opposite problem. Instead of a satisfying crunch, the center was soft and mushy. The strong acidic flavor also overwhelmed the experience.

For a pickle lover seeking a crisp texture and balanced dill flavor, those qualities were disappointing. Still, this was one tasting of one product, not proof that all organic pickles taste this way.

Mt. Olive Kosher Dill Spears: Missing That Dill Punch

Mt. Olive is a familiar name in the pickle aisle, but its Kosher Dill Spears didn’t impress this particular reviewer. The biggest complaint was texture.

Instead of delivering a firm snap, the spears felt soggy. The dill flavor also seemed weaker than expected, leaving the overall experience less satisfying.

Interestingly, different cuts can tell different stories. In a separate 2026 tasting, The Kitchn’s panel gave Mt. Olive Kosher Dill Spears an honorable mention, although opinions about their sweetness varied.

That disagreement reminds us that pickle preferences aren’t universal. A spear one person finds disappointing might be exactly what another enjoys alongside a burger.

Top ‘Ems Fresh Pack Whole Kosher Dill Pickles: An Unexpected Spice Note

Top ‘Ems offered something the testers appreciated immediately: a crisp, juicy bite. That promising start helped the product avoid the bottom positions.

However, the flavor introduced an unexpected twist. The reviewer noticed a warm-spice impression reminiscent of cinnamon during the first bite, followed by a stronger acidic character.

That observation doesn’t prove cinnamon was an ingredient. It simply describes how the pickle tasted to the reviewer. Another important distinction is that the original test identified this product as whole pickles, rather than spears.

Its satisfying crunch earned praise, but the unusual flavor prevented it from climbing higher.

Park Street Deli Kosher Dill Spears: Crisp but Mild

ALDI’s Park Street Deli Kosher Dill Spears performed better on texture. The reviewer liked their crispness and the fact that they were sold chilled in a plastic container.

But one ingredient seemed to be missing from the overall experience: a noticeable dill flavor. The spears tasted mild compared with the stronger contenders.

For someone who prefers a gentler pickle, that could actually be appealing. However, the original tasting rewarded products with a more distinctive balance of dill, garlic, vinegar, and crunch.

Park Street Deli delivered on texture but didn’t leave the same impression through flavor.

Kroger Kosher Dill Spears: A Balance of Tart and Sweet

Kroger’s Kosher Dill Spears landed in the middle of the ranking, offering a mixture of appealing flavors and disappointing textures.

The reviewer particularly enjoyed their balance of tartness and a slight sweetness. That combination made the flavor more interesting than several lower-ranked products.

The texture was less convincing. The exterior skin felt tough, while the center was somewhat mushy. Despite those shortcomings, the reviewer said she would consider buying them again.

For shoppers who appreciate a little sweetness alongside traditional pickle acidity, Kroger’s result shows how enjoyable flavor can sometimes outweigh an imperfect crunch.

Vlasic Kosher Dill Spears: A Familiar Classic

Vlasic Kosher Dill Spears earned fourth place, bringing the ranking into more favorable territory. The reviewer appreciated their familiar, refreshing flavor.

Unlike some lower-ranked products, these spears delivered a satisfying snap without an excessively soft interior. Their acidity also felt balanced rather than overwhelming.

The result was a traditional dill pickle with the familiar taste the reviewer expected. Not every pickle needs an adventurous seasoning blend or unusual ingredient combination.

Sometimes, a dependable crunch and recognizable flavor are enough to make a jar worth keeping in the refrigerator.

Vlasic Purely Pickles Kosher Dill Spears: A Crisp Step Up

Another Vlasic product finished even higher. Purely Pickles Kosher Dill Spears earned third place in the 2022 tasting, outperforming the brand’s standard spears.

The reviewer praised their tart vinegar flavor, crisp texture, and juicy interior. Their dill character was noticeable without becoming overwhelming.

That combination helped them stand apart from competitors that seemed either too mild or too acidic. The result also illustrates why judging an entire brand by one product can be misleading. Even similarly named varieties from the same manufacturer may deliver different eating experiences.

Because this was a 2022 review, shoppers should confirm the current product name and availability before searching for the exact variety.

Claussen Kosher Dill Pickle Spears: A Strong Runner-Up

Claussen came remarkably close to winning the original taste test.

Its Kosher Dill Pickle Spears impressed the reviewer with their bright flavor, pronounced dill, and satisfying crunch.

Unlike several lower-ranked contenders, the interior remained firm without the soggy texture the reviewer disliked elsewhere. The combination produced a more balanced overall experience.

Claussen also performed well in The Kitchn’s separate April 2026 blind tasting, where its dill spears earned runner-up honors.

Together, these two tasting results give Claussen an encouraging record, although neither result guarantees every shopper will prefer it.

Grillo’s Pickles Dill Spears: The Taste-Test Winner

Grillo’s Pickles Dill Spears claimed first place in the 2022 ranking. The reviewer loved their bright appearance, exceptionally crunchy texture, and prominent garlic-and-dill flavor.

The spears also reminded her more of fresh cucumbers than several competing products. According to Grillo’s official product information, the recipe contains cucumbers, vinegar-based brine, garlic, dill, and grape leaves.

The company sells its dill spears refrigerated and lists both 32-ounce and 52-ounce containers. Grillo’s also won The Kitchn’s separate 2026 blind tasting of 11 dill pickle brands, involving seven testers.

That second victory is particularly noteworthy, although taste remains a matter of personal preference.

Which Dill Pickles Are Actually Worth Buying?

Grillo’s won the original nine-brand tasting, followed by Claussen and Vlasic Purely Pickles. But the results don’t mean every other pickle deserves to be abandoned.

Some shoppers prefer stronger vinegar, others enjoy a little sweetness, and many care most about crunch.

The 2026 Kitchn tasting also demonstrated that different panels can reach different conclusions about familiar brands. Before choosing your next jar, consider how you plan to use it.

A crunchy spear for snacking might be a different purchase from pickle chips intended for hamburgers or sandwiches. And if value matters, compare the current price and container size rather than relying on figures from an older review.

The perfect pickle isn’t necessarily the highest-ranked one. It’s the one that delivers the flavor and satisfying snap you enjoy most.
