Florida Is the Only State Where Chocolate Stands Out as the Signature Ice Cream Flavor

When it comes to ice cream, Americans have plenty of opinions. Some swear by classic vanilla, others refuse to order anything without chocolate, and many believe the more cookie chunks and candy pieces, the better. But a recent look at America’s ice cream shopping habits uncovered a surprising result: only one state has chocolate as its signature flavor.

That state is Florida!

According to a 2026 Instacart report, Florida was the only state where chocolate stood out as the signature ice cream flavor based on its share of local purchases compared with the national average. However, there is an interesting twist. Chocolate wasn’t actually the most-ordered flavor in Florida. That honor still belonged to vanilla.

So, what’s behind this unexpected finding, and what does it tell us about America’s ice cream preferences?

Florida may be famous for its sunshine, beaches, and tropical atmosphere, but its ice cream shopping habits reveal something interesting.

In Instacart’s July 2026 report, which examined 2025 purchases, Florida emerged as the only state with chocolate as its signature ice cream flavor.

Now, before chocolate lovers start celebrating, there’s an important detail worth understanding.

The report didn’t simply identify which flavor sold the most ice cream in each state. Instead, researchers looked at which flavors were unusually popular locally compared with their share of purchases nationwide.

In other words, chocolate had a distinctive presence in Florida’s Instacart orders, even though vanilla remained the state’s overall favorite by purchasing share.

That makes Florida’s chocolate designation interesting, but it doesn’t mean Floridians order more chocolate than vanilla.

Vanilla Is Still America’s Undisputed Ice Cream Champion

If you thought chocolate might finally have knocked vanilla off its throne, think again.

Instacart’s research found that vanilla was the most-ordered ice cream flavor in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Nationally, vanilla accounted for approximately 21% of ice cream orders placed through the platform in 2025.

Chocolate came in second with 7.9%, while cookie dough followed with 6.9%.

That’s a considerable lead for vanilla, especially considering how many creative flavors are available in grocery store freezers.

But vanilla’s success isn’t particularly surprising. It’s a familiar classic that works just as well on its own as it does alongside brownies, pies, and other desserts.

Sometimes, keeping things simple really does pay off.

Chocolate Has Plenty of Competition

Chocolate might be one of America’s favorite flavors, but it’s competing in an increasingly crowded ice cream lineup.

According to Instacart’s national rankings, cookies and cream accounted for 5.8% of orders, while chocolate fudge/brownie represented another 5.1%.

Peanut butter and mint chocolate chip each accounted for 4.7%, followed by coffee at 4.5%.

Strawberry, another longtime favorite, captured 3.7%, while cherry rounded out the top ten at 3.1%.

Here’s where things get particularly interesting.

The report counted chocolate fudge/brownie, mint chocolate chip, and several other chocolate-containing flavors separately from plain chocolate.

That means the report’s 7.9% figure represents the chocolate category, not every ice cream variety with chocolate ingredients.

For shoppers who enjoy chocolate in practically everything, the freezer aisle clearly offers plenty of choices.

Other States Have Some Surprisingly Different Favorites

Florida wasn’t the only state with an interesting result in Instacart’s signature-flavor map.

Wisconsin stood out for Moose Tracks, while Tennessee received cheesecake as its signature flavor. Kentucky was the only state assigned raspberry.

Meanwhile, Vermont claimed chocolate fudge/brownie, proving that even closely related chocolate flavors can produce different results.

Out West, rocky road made a particularly strong showing. California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Washington all had rocky road as their signature flavor.

The Southeast offered another interesting pattern.

Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina were grouped together by their distinctive preference for butter pecan.

If you’re wondering where mint chocolate chip made its mark, look to Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

These findings don’t mean those flavors outsold vanilla in their respective states. They simply stood out more strongly against national purchasing patterns.

Still, it’s a fun reminder that America’s ice cream tastes are anything but boring.

Chocolate Actually Tops Another National Ice Cream Survey

Here’s a twist that might vindicate chocolate fans.

While Instacart’s purchasing data crowned vanilla the national winner, another major survey reached a different conclusion.

The International Dairy Foods Association released its Ice Cream & Frozen Novelty Trends Survey in April 2026, based on research conducted with Morning Consult involving more than 2,200 American adults.

In that survey, chocolate ranked first among Americans’ preferred ice cream flavors.

Butter pecan ranked second, followed by vanilla.

Cookies and cream/Oreo and caramel/salted caramel completed the top five.

So why the difference?

The answer depends on what researchers measured.

Instacart examined actual purchases made through its shopping platform, while the industry survey asked people about their preferences.

What someone says they love most isn’t necessarily what ends up in their grocery cart.

Both findings can be accurate because they answer different questions.

Florida’s Ice Cream History Adds a Little Extra Flavor

Although the Instacart report doesn’t explain why chocolate stood out in Florida, the state certainly has some memorable ice cream destinations.

One example is Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor in Dania Beach, which opened in 1956.

The longtime Florida establishment celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2026 and still makes its ice cream on-site.

The business says customers can choose from more than 50 flavors.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale tourism organization has also highlighted the shop’s homemade toppings, including its chocolate brownie crackle.

Of course, one popular ice cream parlor doesn’t explain an entire state’s grocery shopping habits.

Still, it’s a delightful example of Florida’s long-standing love of frozen treats.

Has Florida Always Been a Chocolate State?

Interestingly, Florida’s signature ice cream flavor hasn’t always been chocolate.

In an earlier Instacart analysis published in July 2021, Florida was associated with rum raisin.

Georgia shared that distinction.

Just like the newer report, those findings were based on which flavors were unusually prominent compared with national purchasing patterns.

Vanilla still led actual purchases across every state in that earlier analysis.

The change from rum raisin to chocolate shows how different flavors can stand out in different datasets.

However, the reports don’t establish exactly why Florida’s signature designation changed.

That may be part of what makes these rankings so entertaining. Ice cream preferences are full of surprises, even when the classics remain firmly in control.

What This Means for Ice Cream Lovers

Florida’s chocolate distinction is a fun finding, but the bigger story is how differently Americans enjoy their ice cream.

Some states favor traditional flavors, while others lean toward options like Moose Tracks, cheesecake, or rocky road.

And despite those differences, vanilla still dominates Instacart’s ice cream orders nationwide.

So whether you’re a devoted chocolate fan, a butter pecan enthusiast, or someone who always reaches for vanilla, there’s no need to defend your favorite scoop.

After all, the best ice cream flavor is usually the one you’re happiest to find waiting in your freezer
