Pear Apple Chutney

This recipe puts a seasonal spin on tradition by blending pears and apples into a rich, homemade chutney.

This homemade apple and pear chutney is the perfect mix of sweet and tangy, making it a great addition to sandwiches, a tasty topping for meats, or a delicious pairing with cheese. Its chunky consistency gives it a heartiness that sets it apart from jams and jellies, and it’s just as good spread on toast or bagels.

Chutney has been around for centuries, originally made to preserve fruits and veggies with sugar, vinegar, and spices. This version combines pears and apples for a cozy, homemade twist that is perfect for using extra fruit. It’s super easy to make—all you have to do is simmer everything together until it thickens into a spoon-worthy chutney.

Ingredients

Makes: about 2 pints

Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cook Time: 45 minutes | Total Time: 55 minutes

Directions

Peel, core, and dice the pears and apples.

Finely dice the onion. Peel and mince the ginger finely.

Combine all ingredients in a heavy bottomed pot.

Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Once simmering, cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 25 minutes, covered, until fruit is very soft.

Uncover and cook for 15 minutes until thick and the liquid is mostly gone.

And that’s it.
