Garlic bread grilled cheese on a white plate on a table cloth.
  • Butter-I recommend using unsalted butter in this recipe since we are adding salt, however, you can use salted butter and just omit the salt in this recipe.
  • Parmesan cheese-Grated or shredded parmesan cheese in this recipe will work well and gives that perfect cheesy, salty, garlic bread flavor!
  • Mozzarella cheese-Mozzarella cheese, gives the perfect amount of gooey cheese pull that you would expect in a grilled cheese!
  • Garlic powder-You can use garlic powder, dried minced garlic, garlic salt, or fresh minced garlic for this recipe. Note: If using garlic salt then be sure to omit the extra salt in this recipe.
  • Dried oregano-Dried oregano, basil, or Italian seasoning will give your grilled cheese the most perfect Italian flavor.
  • Salt/Black pepper-Remember to season with a little pinch of salt and pepper.
  • Sliced bread-I used sliced white bread for this recipe but you can absolutely use any of your favorite sliced bread for this recipe.

Use the following step-by-step instructions for how to make this delicious garlic bread grilled cheese:

Garlic bread seasonings in a white bowl on a counter top.

Combine cheeses, butter, oregano, salt, pepper, and garlic powder in a small bowl and mix well. Set aside.

Buttering one side of white bread with a gold butter knife on a cutting board.

Spread room temperature butter on one side of each slice of bread.

Adding the cheese and garlic bread mixture to the middle of the grilled cheese while in the pan with a spoon.

Then add half of the cheese mixture to the middle of two slices of bread and spread evenly.

Placing the second slice of buttered bread to the top of the uncooked grilled cheese while in the pan.

Then place the grilled cheese in your preheated frying pan, butter side down. Cook on each side for about 2 minutes or until both sides are golden brown and the cheese is super melty in the middle! Enjoy!

Hint: If you would rather air fry, instead of pan fry, your garlic bread grilled cheese, then you absolutely can! Set your air fryer to 390 degrees and air fry for 4-6 minutes, flipping over half way through, until golden brown!

Equipment

The TWO main pieces of equipment needed for this recipe are: a mixing bowl and a medium-sized non stick frying pan. Only TWO pieces of equipment to make this recipe super EASY!

Optional: If you would rather air fry, instead of pan fry, your garlic bread grilled cheese, then you absolutely can! You would just need an air fryer, instead of the frying pan.

Either way you choose, you will still only need two pieces of equipment.

Storage

Store your grilled cheese in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.

You can also freeze your grilled cheese in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 1 month. I recommend double wrapping your recipe in parchment paper and plastic wrap before storing the grilled cheese in a container in the freezer. This will help ensure freshness longer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does butter go on both sides of bread grilled cheese?

Traditionally, butter is to be applied to one side of bread for grilled cheese. The butter is meant to create a perfect, buttery, and non-stick crust on the outside of the grilled cheese while cooking. This is why it is recommended to only butter one side of the bread.

Is grilled cheese better with olive oil or butter?

Grilled cheese is traditionally made with butter to create that crisp, golden brown, buttery crust that compliments the melty cheese. While you can also use olive oil, it can create a more oily crust for your grilled cheese.

Should I toast my bread before making grilled cheese?

Toasting your bread before making grilled cheese is not required or recommended. Since your bread will toast while making your grilled cheese in a pan regardless, you run the risk of burning your bread if you toast the bread prior to pan frying.
