9 Frozen Tater Tot Brands Ranked From Worst to Best in a Family Taste Test

There’s something irresistible about a tray of golden tater tots coming out of the oven. Those little potato bites promise a satisfying crunch, a fluffy center, and the kind of comfort that makes you reach for another before finishing the first.

But not every frozen tot delivers that experience. Some turn out beautifully crisp, while others leave you wondering where the potato flavor went.

In February 2025, Allrecipes writer and trained chef Sara Haas tested 10 frozen potato tot brands with her family. They cooked each product according to package directions and served it without labels or condiments.

The family judged appearance, flavor, and texture. Their findings were entirely subjective, but they revealed some interesting differences.

Here are nine of those brands, arranged from the lowest to highest finish in that test. Kroger, originally eighth, was excluded, while the remaining brands kept their original relative order.

Target Market Pantry: A Disappointing Start

Target’s Market Pantry tots finished tenth out of the original 10 products, making them the lowest-ranked choice in this selection. The testers found one redeeming quality: the exterior developed some crispness.

Unfortunately, the flavor left little impression. Haas and her family described the tots as bland, with little character beyond their moderately crisp coating.

That’s disappointing for a food whose appeal depends on the contrast between crunchy edges and a flavorful potato center. Still, this was one family’s experience, not proof that everyone would dislike them.

Cascadian Farm: Good Texture, Missing Flavor

Cascadian Farm’s potato tots earned ninth place in the original tasting. Their darker appearance set them apart from some of the other contenders. But appearance wasn’t the biggest concern.

The family appreciated the crisp exterior and soft center, yet found the overall flavor disappointing. The testers described an earthy quality without enough recognizable potato flavor.

That’s an interesting reminder that texture alone doesn’t guarantee an enjoyable tot. Someone who prefers a milder potato snack might react differently, but this panel wanted more flavor.

McCain: Plenty of Crunch, Too Much Onion

McCain finished seventh in the original Allrecipes ranking. At first glance, these tots seemed promising. The family liked their appearance and appreciated the crisp exterior. Then came the seasoning.

The testers felt the onion flavor was too dominant, leaving the potato itself struggling for attention. The interior texture was acceptable, but it wasn’t enough to overcome their disappointment with the seasoning.

For anyone who enjoys a pronounced onion flavor, that characteristic might sound appealing. However, Haas’s family preferred a tot where the potato remained the main attraction.

McCain’s result shows just how much seasoning preferences can influence a tasting.

Ore-Ida: Familiar Comfort With a Softer Finish

Ore-Ida is a recognizable name in frozen potatoes, but brand familiarity didn’t earn it the top position. The family placed its tested tots sixth overall.

Their biggest complaint concerned the exterior, which remained relatively pale and lacked the crispness they wanted after following the cooking instructions. The center received a warmer response.

Testers enjoyed its mashed-potato-like texture and familiar potato flavor. They considered Ore-Ida a reasonable basic choice, particularly when paired with dipping sauce.

It’s worth remembering that this result shouldn’t automatically be applied to every Ore-Ida variety, including its separately marketed Extra Crispy products.

Trader Joe’s: A Solid Choice That Needs Something Extra

Trader Joe’s claimed fifth place in the original tasting. The family liked the golden appearance and crisp exterior, while the inside remained pleasantly soft without becoming mushy.

The seasoning also struck a relatively balanced note. Nothing felt overwhelmingly salty or heavily spiced. So why didn’t Trader Joe’s climb higher? Testers felt the flavor needed a little extra help, especially from ketchup or another preferred condiment.

For someone who likes to build a snack around dipping sauces, that might not matter. But when the tots were served plain, other brands made a stronger impression.

ALDI Season’s Choice: A Pleasant Potato Surprise

ALDI’s Season’s Choice earned fourth place, bringing the original test into its top four. What impressed the family most was something surprisingly straightforward: the potatoes actually tasted like potatoes.

The exterior cooked to a satisfying crispness, while the center maintained a recognizable potato texture. Rather than relying on heavy seasoning, these tots delivered the familiar flavor the family had been searching for. Allrecipes’ panel responded positively and said they would happily eat them again.

For shoppers who prefer a straightforward frozen potato tot without an overly elaborate flavor profile, ALDI’s result offers an encouraging reason to consider the brand.

Alexia: More Like a Potato Croquette

Alexia earned third place, though its texture set it apart from several traditional tots.

The family compared its preparation to a potato croquette. That meant a crunchy exterior surrounding an especially smooth, creamy interior.

Testers enjoyed the flavor and texture, but recognized the result might not satisfy someone looking for a conventional shredded-potato tot. Interestingly, another outlet reached an even more enthusiastic conclusion.

In Mashed’s separate ranking, Alexia Organic Yukon Select Puffs finished first among 12 products. The differing results highlight how personal texture preferences can be.

Sonic: The Runner-Up With a Familiar Appeal

Sonic’s frozen tots secured second place in the Allrecipes family tasting. Testers enjoyed the crunchy exterior and creamy, well-seasoned center. They even described a buttery quality that made the flavor appealing.

The only notable criticism was that the family wanted a little more potato flavor. Even so, every tester selected Sonic as the runner-up.

That unanimous agreement is particularly interesting because it shows how well the product matched this family’s shared expectations.

For anyone curious about trying a frozen version of a familiar fast-food favorite, Sonic’s strong showing makes it worth considering.

Lamb Weston: The Family’s Unanimous Winner

Lamb Weston took first place in the original Allrecipes test, and the family unanimously agreed. Its exterior was the crispiest of the products they tried.

Inside, the potato remained light and creamy, with seasoning the testers considered well balanced. Unlike some lower-ranked contenders, Lamb Weston impressed the family without needing additional sauce. But this victory wasn’t universal across independent tastings.

Mashed ranked the tested Lamb Weston Tater Puffs tenth out of 12, criticizing the creamy interior the Allrecipes family enjoyed.

Meanwhile, DoorDash’s separate blind tasting placed Lamb Weston second, behind Signature Select. The disagreements show why texture preferences matter so much.

So, Which Frozen Tots Should You Buy?

Allrecipes’ family selected Lamb Weston as its winner, followed by Sonic and Alexia. But the other published tastings produced noticeably different results. Mashed favored Alexia Organic Yukon Select Puffs, while DoorDash’s adult panel unanimously chose Signature Select.

None of these tests represents every shopper’s preferences. Cooking instructions, the exact product variety, and whether you eat the tots plain or with sauce can all shape the experience.

For the most useful comparison, check the precise package and follow its preparation directions. Remember that a tot one reviewer considers too creamy might be exactly what another person loves.

Ultimately, the best frozen tots deliver your favorite combination of golden crunch, potato flavor, and soft, satisfying centers.
