Ingredients

  • 1 10 oz. bag mini marshmallows
  • ¼ cup butter or half a stick
  • 5 cups rice krispie cereal or approximately half a 12 oz. box
  • Black writing gel for faces
  • Yellow and red food coloring
  • Kit-Kat bars for stems

Instructions

  • Grease a 12-cup muffin pan. Set aside.
  • Add butter to a large pot, and melt over medium heat.
  • Add marshmallows to the pot, and cook over medium-low heat until fully melted, stirring often to avoid burning. Remove from heat.
  • Add red and yellow food coloring until the desired shade of orange is achieved.
  • Add rice krispie cereal to the pot, and stir with a greased rubber spatula until fully combined.
  • Using the greased rubber spatula, fill each muffin cup to the top, pressing down firmly to compress the rice krispies.
  • Place muffin pan in refrigerator for 30 minutes, or until set.
  • Cut the Kit-Kat bars into three equal pieces.
  • Take each rice krispie treat out, and use your hands to gently round out the edges and form a “pumpkin” shape.
  • Take a butter knife carve out a small hole in the top of each pumpkin, and insert a kit-kat piece into the hole.
  • Draw a face on each pumpkin with the writing gel.

Notes

Adding the food colors to the marshmallows BEFORE the rice krispies is crucial to ensure the color blends properly.
I like to discard the middle piece of the kit-kat bars and use only the end pieces as they have a clean, finished look.
