KFC Is Switching to Coca-Cola in 2027: What Happens to Sweet Lightning?

KFC’s U.S. drink menu is changing. The chain will begin replacing PepsiCo beverages with Coca-Cola products in January 2027, leaving customers who order Mountain Dew Sweet Lightning to wonder whether the restaurant-exclusive soda will remain available.

In its October 15, 2026 announcement, KFC said it partnered with Coca-Cola, with Coca-Cola beverages expected across all U.S. KFC restaurants by spring 2027. The announcement does not address Sweet Lightning’s future or provide the complete new drink lineup.

For customers who enjoy the peach-and-honey-flavored soda, that missing detail changes the transition’s significance. KFC developed Sweet Lightning specifically for KFC, making its place on the menu more than another chapter in the Coke-versus-Pepsi rivalry.

KFC’s Pepsi Relationship Began With Ownership

The connection between KFC and Pepsi stretches back decades, starting with a corporate acquisition.

According to CNBC’s reporting on the beverage change, PepsiCo acquired KFC in 1986. Before that acquisition, the chicken chain was Coca-Cola’s second-largest fountain account, behind McDonald’s.

PepsiCo later spun off its restaurant business, including KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. The Pepsi beverage relationship continued after the ownership structure changed.

That history explains why Pepsi products became such a familiar part of the U.S. KFC experience. The relationship was not built around a recent promotion or a temporary menu offering. It continued long after KFC left PepsiCo.

According to CNBC’s account, the upcoming transition follows decades of serving PepsiCo beverages in KFC’s U.S. restaurants. Customers accustomed to ordering Pepsi with their chicken will notice the change.

What Is Scheduled to Change in 2027?

The October 15 partnership announcement from Coca-Cola and KFC establishes the rollout schedule: Coca-Cola beverages will begin arriving in January 2027, with availability expected across U.S. KFC restaurants by spring.

That is a transition window, not a single nationwide changeover date.

The announcement does not provide conversion dates for individual restaurants. January marks the start of the rollout, rather than a promise that every location will introduce its new selection at once.

The announcement also does not provide the complete beverage lineup. Coca-Cola’s selection as the supplier establishes the business relationship, but it doesn’t tell customers which individual products each restaurant will offer.

For diners, those specifics will determine what the agreement means at the counter or drive-thru: which familiar options remain, which drinks arrive, and whether any exclusive beverages become part of the new menu.

Sweet Lightning Was Developed for KFC

Sweet Lightning plays a key role in this story because the restaurant shaped its identity.

In its June 11, 2019 launch announcement, PepsiCo introduced the Mountain Dew variety as a peach-and-honey blend. The company said it would be available exclusively at KFC restaurants nationwide by July 1 that year.

KFC and Mountain Dew’s food-and-beverage development teams created the drink to accompany Original Recipe fried chicken. PepsiCo described Sweet Lightning as KFC’s first exclusive beverage.

It was presented as a pairing for the chain’s signature food, giving customers something associated specifically with a KFC visit.

The launch announcement also described Sweet Lightning as a “permanent pour.” That was how PepsiCo presented the drink in 2019; it doesn’t say what the 2027 beverage agreement will mean for it.

The question now is whether that restaurant-specific offering will continue under a different beverage partnership.

Is Sweet Lightning Being Discontinued?

The October 15 partnership announcement does not say that Sweet Lightning is being discontinued. It also doesn’t confirm the drink will remain available after the transition.

That is the central distinction between the confirmed news and the unresolved product question.

Mountain Dew is a PepsiCo brand, so its place in a Coca-Cola-supplied beverage lineup is relevant. But the supplier change alone does not provide a confirmed removal date for Sweet Lightning.

Two issues remain: whether KFC will continue serving the drink and whether PepsiCo will continue producing it. The partnership announcement does not resolve either one.

It does not identify a replacement flavor, describe an exception for Sweet Lightning, or provide a final serving date. Customers looking for a definitive answer about the drink will need product-specific information beyond that announcement.

Why KFC Says It Is Making the Change

KFC presents the partnership as part of its effort to evolve its restaurant experience and beverage offering.

In the joint announcement, KFC U.S. President Catherine Tan-Gillespie described the agreement as a step toward strengthening restaurants and making the brand more relevant to customers. Coca-Cola emphasized its beverage portfolio, innovation capabilities and restaurant support.

CNBC also reported that Tan-Gillespie described the new offering in a memo to franchisees and employees as an opportunity to innovate, respond to changing tastes and give customers more reasons to choose KFC.

Those statements explain the company’s intended direction. They do not yet establish the complete menu or how customers will respond once the rollout begins.

For someone who regularly orders Sweet Lightning, the practical question remains narrower than the business strategy: what will be available with their usual meal?

This Is a U.S. Agreement, Not a Worldwide Switch

The announced change applies to KFC’s U.S. restaurants.

According to CNBC, some international KFC markets already serve Coca-Cola beverages. Tan-Gillespie also said Pepsi remains an important partner for parent company Yum Brands and KFC’s international markets.

It is not an announcement that every KFC worldwide is replacing Pepsi products. It also does not announce beverage supplier changes for Taco Bell or Pizza Hut, even though those chains share a parent company with KFC.

What Customers Should Watch For

Next, watch for KFC’s full beverage lineup, local conversion dates, and a direct statement about Sweet Lightning’s status.

The confirmed plan calls for Coca-Cola beverages to begin arriving at U.S. KFC restaurants in January 2027, with availability expected across the system by spring. The partnership announcement leaves Sweet Lightning’s future unanswered; it does not establish that the exclusive drink is disappearing.

The business story is a supplier change, but the consumer question is continuity: which familiar drinks will remain part of the meal?

As KFC prepares its new beverage menu, what would make the transition feel like an improvement to you: more choices, your preferred cola, or keeping Sweet Lightning available?
