5 Restaurant Chains Refreshing Their Fall Menus: What’s New and What’s Returning

Fall menus are reaching an interesting crossroads. Halloween promotions are still on display, but cranberry drinks, peppermint shakes, and Santa-themed cups are already entering the picture.

For customers, that means more choices and a calendar worth watching. Some items arrived in October. Others are announced but won’t roll out more broadly until November. A few can be ordered early through an app.

McDonald’s, SONIC, Zaxbys, Jimmy John’s, and Whataburger each have confirmed seasonal changes, ranging from new beverages to returning sandwiches and refreshed meal bundles.

Not every seasonal release is a new recipe, however. Sometimes the change is a different topping, a returning item, or collectible packaging. Here is what’s new, what’s returning, and when each lineup arrives.

McDonald’s: November Drinks Follow an Earlier Fall Coffee Release

McDonald’s is moving from apple-and-caramel flavors toward cranberry and cookie butter.

Its new limited-time beverage lineup is scheduled to arrive November 3 at participating restaurants nationwide, according to the company’s U.S. Menu Spotter.

The Frosted Cranberry Splash with Sprite combines the soft drink with orange and cranberry flavors, cold foam, and cranberry sprinkles.

A Red Bull Frosted Cranberry Energizer brings the cranberry flavor, foam, and sprinkles to a different beverage base, with classic Red Bull and Red Bull Zero options.

For coffee drinkers, the chain is introducing Cookie Butter Frappé, Latte, and Iced Coffee options topped with caramel cookie crumbs and sweet vanilla whip. These are upcoming November additions, not drinks that launched in October.

They follow an earlier seasonal release: Caramel Apple Pie coffees, announced August 17. That limited-time collection included a Frappé, hot and iced lattes, and iced coffee.

McDonald’s also brought back Spicy Chicken McNuggets beginning September 1. The nuggets are a returning limited-time offering, with availability varying by restaurant.

SONIC: Early App Access Before the November Rollout

SONIC’s seasonal transition includes a burger, a frozen dessert drink, and flavored sodas.

The Santa Slush Float and Smoked Gouda and Bacon SONIC Smasher became available through the app on October 26. SONIC’s announcement says the nationwide rollout is scheduled for November 2.

The float combines cherry and vanilla flavors in a Slush layered with vanilla soft serve. A cherry-and-Santa-themed cup completes the presentation.

The new Smasher pairs Angus beef patties with smoked gouda, bacon, and black pepper aioli. SONIC lists double and triple versions.

Two other seasonal drinks take different approaches. Merry Berry Fizz combines Sprite or Sprite Zero with cranberry syrup. Holiday Creamy Vanilla uses Coca-Cola or Coca-Cola Zero with vanilla syrup and sweet cream.

The chain is also refreshing its Big Deal Meal. The announced bundle contains a SONIC Cheeseburger, medium fries or tots, small Premium Chicken Bites, and a medium soft drink or iced tea.

That bundle is separate from the new burger. Customers should not assume the seasonal Smasher is the sandwich included in the meal.

SONIC calls this its winter lineup, even though app access begins in October. For anyone ordering before November 2, the difference between digital access and the broader launch matters more than the seasonal label.

Zaxbys: A New Sauce Arrives Ahead of a Peppermint Shake

Zaxbys is splitting its seasonal menu between savory heat and a peppermint dessert.

Honey Chipotle Sauce and the Peppermint Cookies & Cream Shake are scheduled for nationwide availability on November 2, 2026, with a limited run through January 18, 2027.

The sauce combines honey and brown sugar with red chili and chipotle peppers. It adds another flavor option for the chain’s Chicken Fingerz and wings rather than introducing a different chicken preparation.

The shake is peppermint-flavored and hand-spun, with cookies-and-cream pieces mixed into it and added on top.

Zax Rewardz members received early access to the sauce beginning October 26 through digital ordering channels, including the app, website, and third-party delivery. The announcement specifically assigns that early-access benefit to the sauce, not the shake.

That is the essential scheduling detail. The sauce being available in October does not mean the peppermint shake has also launched.

Both are new to Zaxbys seasonal lineup, pairing a familiar holiday flavor with a new sauce for its chicken.

Jimmy John’s: A Returning Picklewich Gets a New Collectible Meal

Jimmy John’s is bringing back an established item while adding something new.

The Picklewich, which uses a large pickle instead of bread, returned October 26 alongside pickle-flavored Jimmy Chips. The Triple Pickle meal followed October 27 at participating locations nationwide.

The Triple Pickle meal combines a Picklewich, pickle-flavored chips, and a collectible Pickle Pal keychain.

The six returning sandwich builds are Vito, turkey, ham, roast beef, tuna, and veggie. The Vito version includes salami and capocollo.

The new element is the collection of five mystery pickle plushie keychains. The chain’s announcement limits the collectible promotion to Triple Pickle meal purchases in stores and at drive-thrus, while supplies last.

That makes this a different kind of seasonal refresh. The returning sandwich supplies familiarity, while the meal format and collectible add novelty.

Customers ordering solely for the keychain should check the purchase conditions. A returning sandwich doesn’t necessarily mean the collectible remains in stock.

Whataburger: A Returning Burger Meets a New Chicken Option

Whataburger’s lineup began October 20, putting it among the releases already introduced rather than awaiting November.

The returning Bacon Blaze Jalapeño Double layers two beef patties with Jalapeño Ranch, jalapeño cream cheese, bacon, sliced jalapeños, and aged cheddar. A Jr. version is also offered.

The new Bacon Blaze Chicken takes the flavor combination into a chicken sandwich, with a choice of grilled chicken or Whatachick’n on a toasted potato bun.

The beverage additions include the new Sleigh Berry Whatafresher, combining cranberry and citrus flavors with cranberry pieces and a soft whip.

The White Chocolate Raspberry Shake pairs those flavors with a vanilla shake base.

The lineup is available for a limited time at participating locations.

What to Check Before Ordering

The clearest dividing line is the calendar: Jimmy John’s and Whataburger introduced their featured October releases, while SONIC and Zaxby’s schedule broader launches for November 2. McDonald’s new drinks follow on November 3.

Early digital access is not the same as general availability. A returning item is not a new recipe, and collectible stock can run out separately from food inventory.

Checking the selected restaurant’s ordering menu can help clarify what is available for that visit.

With familiar sandwiches returning and new flavors arriving alongside them, a seasonal menu can be more appealing: rediscovering an old favorite or finding something worth starting a new tradition around?
